Praktikum/Datenerhebung

Internship and data collection

The first major research phase took place from May to mid-July 2019. Our colleague Lena Franzkowiak spent 9 weeks in the field research, being ethnographically involved in the daily care routine in the Sophienhaus in Weimar, i.e. observing and also immersing into the activity. During her internship at the residential home for the eldery of our cooperation partner, the Diakoniestiftung Weimar Bad Lobenstein, she got to know the tasks and practices of the care staff very closely. She was able to help with geatric care activities and gained important insights into the daily challenges that care staff have to face, how organisational processes are structured and how worth living care can be designed. Our focus was not only on nursing, but also on the care and activities of the social service of the Diakonie.

In addition, through the observation of Philipp Graf (8 days), Kristian Gohlke and Prof. Eva Hornecker (2 days each), we were able to gather perspectives from various disciplines (STS, HCI and Design) and gain a comprehensive picture of this complex field. In a next step, the collected data will be evaluated with regard to possible fields of application for our project. At the same time, however, the results should also serve to guide the further process of evaluating and developing the prototypes.

We would like to thank the Sophienhaus Weimar senior nursing home and its residents for all the insights and the exciting time!
